During Apple’s October 2012 event there was a surprise announcement about the iPad4. Yet many experts quietly speculated that there were also plans for a thinner and lighter iPad 5 to be released in early 2013. Now we have passed early 2013 but more news and rumors are trickling in with increasing frequency. The latest rumors all agree that the iPad 5 will be lighter and thinner due to a new lighter and thinner battery. There are also rumors that Apple would like to introduce a new iPad type offering every 6 months.
According to Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst for KGI Securities, the fourth generation full-sized iPad might not be enough to fend off competitors. Kuo cited Microsoft’s Surface tablet as posing a particular risk to Apple’s dominance. Currently Surface holds a 7.5% share of the tablet market.
According to a report from DigitTimes in May 2013, the new iPad is rumored to be 33% lighter than the iPad 4. Weight loss was also improved by dieting one LED light bar instead of two and that the display also has a thinner piece of glass.
